TIGA DAM SET FOR 8MW TURBINE TEST RUN IN KANO

River Basin Authority says milestone move will boost power generation without disrupting water supply.

The Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBD) is set to inaugurate an 8-megawatt turbine test run at Tiga Dam, marking a major step toward improved power generation in Kano State.

In a statement, HJRBD Managing Director Rabiu Bichi said the technical test would involve temporarily closing the dam’s left-side and riverbed outlets, while water would instead be released through the turbines. According to him, the controlled discharge will ensure downstream water supply remains stable.

Bichi described the exercise as a significant milestone for energy development in the state, adding that the authority has taken measures to prevent water shortages during the process.

He advised farmers, fishermen, and nearby communities to stay alert and report any unusual developments to the nearest HJRBD office.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to responsible water management and supporting water users across the region.
