Former Sokoto governor Aminu Tambuwal says his exit from the PDP was driven by a deepening internal crisis and what he describes as a calculated move to weaken Nigeria’s opposition before the 2027 elections.
Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal says he dumped the Peoples Democratic Party because of its lingering internal crisis, warning that the situation could weaken opposition politics ahead of the 2027 presidential race.
Tambuwal, now representing Sokoto South under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks while addressing journalists in Sokoto following his defection.
According to him, the decision came after years of consultations and careful review of Nigeria’s political landscape, a process he said began more than two years ago.
He alleged that developments within major opposition parties point to a broader strategy to weaken them, possibly paving the way for a dominant one-party system under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Tambuwal revealed that a panel of political analysts, politicians and university professors was commissioned to study the country’s evolving political situation.
The findings, he said, suggested that both the PDP and the Labour Party might struggle to remain strong enough to produce competitive presidential candidates in 2027.
He further alleged that part of the strategy included moves to weaken opposition figures such as Peter Obi ahead of the next election cycle.
According to Tambuwal, the decision by like-minded politicians to move to the ADC was aimed at building a stronger and more credible opposition platform.
He stressed that the movement was not about personal ambition, but about creating a people-driven political alternative.
Tambuwal added that many Nigerians are dissatisfied with current realities such as insecurity, poverty, corruption and declining public trust, insisting that the electorate ultimately determines electoral outcomes.
“Presidents and governors have lost elections before when people were not convinced,” he noted, stressing that his move was about the future of his constituents and Nigeria, not personal political gain.
