Church women take to the streets to speak out against rising cases of gender-based violence in the South-East.
Women of the Methodist Women Fellowship in Enugu staged a peaceful protest against the growing cases of Gender-Based Violence in the South-East.
The women, drawn from the Central Methodist Church Uwani, marched through major streets including Zik Avenue, Edinburgh and Obiagu to mark the 2026 celebration of Mother’s Day.
Leading the protest, Mrs Esther Aniagu lamented the disturbing cases of abuse against women and girls, saying many victims continue to suffer sexual and physical violence in silence.
She cited several troubling incidents, including cases of child defilement, domestic violence and sexual abuse within families and neighbourhoods, describing them as alarming and unacceptable.
“As we mark Mother’s Day, we appeal to men to rethink these immoral actions and protect women and girls,” she said.
Aniagu also urged mothers to pay closer attention to their children’s safety, even as they pursue their livelihoods. She encouraged victims and families to report cases of abuse to the police, the Women Affairs Ministry, Women Aid Collective and other human rights groups.
Also speaking, Mrs Chinwe Edeh condemned the mistreatment of widows by in-laws and the stigma faced by childless women, urging women to pursue economic empowerment through trade and entrepreneurship.
She further encouraged women to remain strong in faith, assuring them that perseverance and unity would help them overcome societal challenges.
The protest forms part of activities leading to the **Mother’s Day celebration observed by the Methodist Church Nigeria and the Anglican Church of Nigeria on March 15.
