The Lagos State Taskforce has pushed back against allegations that its officials demand bribes to release seized vehicles, insisting all enforcement actions follow due legal procedures.
The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit has dismissed reports alleging that its officials collect bribes before releasing impounded vehicles.
In a statement issued in Lagos, the agency’s spokesperson, Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, described the claims as misleading, malicious and completely unsubstantiated.
According to him, enforcement operations by the taskforce strictly follow legal procedures, with traffic offenders charged to court where necessary.
Gbadeyan stressed that decisions regarding seized vehicles are handled through due process and not at the discretion of officers.
He also defended the taskforce chairman, Adetayo Akerele, noting that the senior police officer and lawyer has built a reputation for integrity.
The spokesperson criticised the online platform behind the allegation for failing to contact the chairman for clarification before publishing the report.
He added that enforcement teams are led by experienced officers who would not risk their careers for financial inducements.
According to him, the publication may have been an attempt to pressure authorities to release vehicles seized for traffic violations through public criticism and social media campaigns.
Gbadeyan reminded motorists that offences such as driving against traffic are serious violations under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018 and could attract heavy penalties, including possible vehicle forfeiture.
He urged anyone with credible evidence of misconduct by officers to report it, assuring that appropriate disciplinary actions would follow if wrongdoing is proven.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to transparent enforcement and strict compliance with Lagos traffic laws.
