Tunji-Ojo calls for transformational leadership to drive Africa’s development.
Abuja, March 13, 2026 – Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has urged public servants to embrace accountability, efficiency, and visionary leadership to unlock Africa’s development potential.
Speaking at the Closing Ceremony of the 2025 AIG Public Leaders Programme in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo stressed that Africa’s greatest asset is its people, not natural resources. He called on officials to focus on long-term impact over short-term gains, saying true statesmanship prioritizes the next generation.
Highlighting reforms in Nigeria’s immigration system, he cited contactless passport renewal for diaspora Nigerians as an example of transformational leadership that modernizes institutions and improves service delivery.
Tunji-Ojo added, “Leaders should build systems, not just seek recognition. The legacy of a leader is defined by the institutions they leave behind.”
The Chairman of the Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, noted that Nigeria has the ideas and intelligence but struggles with implementation, emphasizing that the programme equips public servants to turn knowledge into tangible results.
Executive Vice-Chair Ofovwe Aig-Imoukhuede added that supporting civil servants with training and resources is key to improving governance across Africa. The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, lauded the initiative, urging participants to apply their skills to strengthen public institutions.
