Leaders called to embrace accountability and boost citizen participation in governance.
Dr Adewole Adebayo, SDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, has urged policies that strengthen citizens’ role in Nigeria’s democracy. Speaking at an Iftar hosted by his wife in Abuja, Adebayo highlighted the nation’s cultural and religious diversity as a source of strength and called on leaders to govern with humility, justice, and accountability.
“Democracy belongs to the people. Electoral processes must reflect fairness, transparency, and public confidence,” he said, stressing that leadership is a temporary trust for service.
Alhaji Yusuf Dantalle, IPAC Chairman, also called for reforms to increase democratic participation, warning that certain rules—like indirect party primaries and mandatory use of NIN—could limit citizens’ involvement. He urged reliance on the judiciary to settle disputes and discouraged a “win-at-all-costs” mindset.
Prof. Sadiq Gombe, SDP National Chairman, stressed unity, religious tolerance, and constructive engagement as key to Nigeria’s democratic progress. The Iftar concluded with prayers for peace, stability, and a stronger democracy.
