Türkiye is set to phase out common disposable plastics—forks, spoons, straws, plates, and cotton buds—following the EU’s Single-Use Plastics directive, as part of its environmental push.
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change says the regulation, now in draft form, could cut 1.5 million tons of carbon emissions annually and save around $44 million in waste management costs.
Public support is high: a recent survey found 76% back restrictions on disposable plastics and 80% favour reusable alternatives like metal, glass, and ceramic.
The move aligns with Türkiye’s National Circular Economy Strategy, aiming to curb single-use plastics, marine litter, and microplastics by 2028.
