Switzerland has temporarily shut its embassy in Tehran, citing an “increasing security risk”, with the ambassador and five staff safely leaving Iran by land, the government said Wednesday.
The Swiss team, along with four others who left earlier this month, will return once the situation stabilizes. Switzerland has long represented U.S. interests in Iran, acting as a vital communication link between Washington and Tehran.
The U.S. embassy in Bern backed Switzerland’s move, calling the diplomats’ work “essential to protecting U.S. interests and citizens.”
Swiss authorities confirmed they will continue facilitating communications between the two countries during the closure.
