DRONE STRIKES KILL AID WORKER IN GOMA, RAISE WAR CRIMES CONCERNS

Drone attacks hit Goma in eastern Congo on Wednesday, killing at least three people, including a French aid worker, marking the first such strike since AFC/M23 seized the city last year.

The rebel group blamed the Congolese army for targeting densely populated areas, while UN peacekeepers warned attacks on staff could constitute war crimes. The UNICEF confirmed one of its employees, a French national, was killed.

French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib condemned the strikes, stressing aid workers must never be targeted and calling for respect for international humanitarian law.

Congo’s government expressed condolences and said investigations are ongoing, while Rwanda highlighted security concerns along its border, despite a U.S.-mediated peace deal last year.

Residents reported two early-morning explosions, shaking homes near high-profile residences, including those linked to former President Joseph Kabila. A second drone reportedly missed its target and fell into Lake Kivu.

The strikes follow weeks of intensified drone operations by both sides, escalating tensions in the region.
