Women working in Nigeria’s mining industry are calling for greater access to technical training and professional development to help them grow and take on bigger roles in the sector.
The call was made by the Women in Mining in Nigeria (WIMIN) through its National President, Dr Janet Adeyemi, in a message marking International Women’s Day (IWD) in Abuja.
Adeyemi said while progress has been made, more support is still needed to empower women in mining. She urged stronger institutional backing, better training opportunities, improved access to funding for women-led mining ventures, and safer working conditions across mining sites.
She also emphasised the importance of greater female representation in leadership and decision-making positions, as well as mentorship programmes for young women entering the industry.
According to her, policies and industry practices must deliberately promote gender inclusion and amplify the voices of women contributing to Nigeria’s mining sector.
Adeyemi reaffirmed WIMIN’s commitment to building a mining industry where women can thrive, lead and contribute meaningfully to national development.
International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, celebrates the achievements of women and calls for stronger action toward gender equality and empowerment.
