STUDENTS RAISE ALARM OVER CAMPUS BLACKOUT, DEMAND REVIEW OF POWER MINISTRY

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has raised concerns over persistent power outages affecting universities and other tertiary institutions, urging the Federal Government to review the performance of the Ministry of Power.

In a statement issued in Ibadan, the zone’s coordinator Kayode Adeyemo said the prolonged blackout across campuses in the region is disrupting academic activities, especially as many students prepare for examinations.

According to him, months of erratic electricity supply have made it difficult for students to study at night, conduct research, or complete assignments, with hostels, libraries and study centres often left in darkness for long periods.

Adeyemo warned that the situation also poses security risks, as poorly lit hostels and surrounding areas could expose students to theft, robbery and other crimes.

He noted that many students had high expectations when President Bola Tinubu appointed Adebayo Adelabu as Minister of Power, but said the ongoing electricity challenges suggest the sector still requires urgent reforms.

NANS is now calling on the Federal Government to take decisive action to stabilise electricity supply, particularly in communities hosting tertiary institutions.

According to the group, Nigerian students deserve a safe and conducive learning environment supported by reliable power.
