The Maldives has boosted support for working mothers, extending childcare breaks until children turn two, up from the previous one-year limit.
The parliament unanimously approved the amendment Monday, giving all 62 lawmakers present a vote in favor. Previously, mothers were entitled to two 30-minute breaks per day until their child’s first birthday; now the benefit lasts an extra year, on top of the standard one-hour workday break.
The law also updates dismissal notice rules, requiring two weeks’ notice for employees with up to a year of service, and allows the cabinet to waive foreign worker quota fees for certain businesses to support SMEs and startups.
