COURT SETS MAY 5 FOR TRIAL OF TERROR SUSPECT LINKED TO OKENE CHURCH ATTACK

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 5 to continue the trial of Abdulazeez Obadaki, a suspected member of the Ansaru terrorist group linked to the deadly 2012 attack on a Deeper Life Bible Church in Okene, Kogi State.

The attack, which occurred on June 12, 2012, left at least 19 worshippers, including the pastor, dead and several others injured.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik adjourned the case after the prosecution counsel, David Kaswe, requested more time to study the case file recently transferred to his office from the Department of State Services (DSS).

Obadaki, also known as “Bomboy,” faces a six-count charge bordering on terrorism, including alleged involvement in terror activities, failure to disclose information about a terrorist, and supporting attacks on four commercial banks in Edo State—First Bank, UBA, Union Bank and Zenith Bank.

Prosecutors also alleged that he conspired with other terrorists to attack the Kuje Correctional Centre in July 2022, which led to his escape along with other detainees.

During proceedings, the 42-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody but denied the other five terrorism-related charges.

The court ordered that he remain in DSS custody pending the continuation of the trial.
