Tensions flared in eastern Lebanon early Monday as violent clashes broke out following an alleged attempt by Israeli forces to carry out an airborne landing operation using helicopters near the Lebanese-Syrian border.
According to Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency, heavy fighting occurred in the Al-Chaara area near the outskirts of Nabi Chit, as local fighters attempted to repel the reported Israeli incursion.
The Hezbollah group said its fighters detected about 15 helicopters belonging to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) approaching the area from the direction of Syria. It claimed its forces engaged the helicopters and the landing unit with “appropriate weapons,” forcing them to withdraw.
Hezbollah also noted that it had foiled a similar Israeli airborne commando operation near Nabi Chit just last week.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the earlier confrontation left 41 people dead and 40 others injured, highlighting the growing tension along the border region.
