ATLETICO THRASH SPURS 5–2 IN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FIRST-LEG SHOWDOWN

Atletico Madrid delivered a ruthless attacking display on Tuesday night, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash and taking a commanding advantage ahead of the return leg in London.

The Spanish side struck early and often at the Metropolitano Stadium, punishing Tottenham’s defensive errors in a devastating first half. Marcos Llorente opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Spurs goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky slipped while trying to play the ball from the back.

Eight minutes later, Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead when defender Micky van de Ven also lost his footing while controlling a pass, allowing Atletico to capitalise again.

Things quickly worsened for Spurs as Julian Alvarez seized on another mistake from Kinsky to score Atletico’s third in the 15th minute — the earliest a team has ever scored three goals in a Champions League knockout match. The struggling goalkeeper was substituted just two minutes later.

Atletico added a fourth through Robin Le Normand, whose header from close range was confirmed by goal-line technology after goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario parried Griezmann’s free kick.

Tottenham briefly fought back in the 26th minute when Pedro Porro fired past Jan Oblak after receiving a pass from Richarlison. Spurs captain Cristian Romero nearly added another before halftime but saw his header strike the post.

Any hopes of a comeback faded early in the second half when Atletico launched a rapid counterattack. Alvarez sprinted from inside his own half and calmly finished past Vicario to score his second goal and Atletico’s fifth.

Tottenham grabbed a late consolation in the 76th minute after an error by Oblak. Substitute Dominic Solanke pounced on the loose ball to score, but the damage had already been done.

Alvarez welcomed the win but cautioned that the tie is far from over, noting that another 90 minutes remain in London.

The emphatic result leaves Atletico firmly in control as Tottenham prepare for a tough task in the second leg next week.
