A daring response by local vigilantes has saved three residents from suspected bandits after a midnight raid in Chitta community, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.
Residents said heavily armed attackers stormed the community around midnight on Sunday, firing gunshots to scare villagers before abducting three people and attempting to flee into nearby bushes.
But the kidnappers’ escape plan was cut short when local vigilante operatives quickly mobilised after receiving distress calls and chased the attackers into the forest.
According to community sources, the pressure from the vigilantes forced the bandits to abandon their captives while fleeing deeper into the bush.
“The vigilantes acted very fast. Once they heard about the abduction, they went after the bandits and forced them to drop the victims,” a resident said.
The three victims were later rescued unharmed and safely returned to the community, while the attackers escaped.
Residents have praised the swift and courageous action of the vigilante group, saying their intervention prevented what could have turned into a prolonged kidnapping ordeal.
However, the incident has renewed concerns about rising banditry across Kwara North, with locals urging the Kwara State Government and security agencies to strengthen security in rural communities.
The rescue came shortly after another attack in Ndeji village in Edu LGA, where suspected bandits reportedly abducted a housewife and her son during a late-night invasion.
