TEEN, SIX OTHERS IN COURT OVER ALLEGED SOCIAL MEDIA IMPERSONATION

A teenager and six others have landed in court in Ibadan over an alleged online impersonation scheme.

18-year-old Samad Olalere, alongside Daud Ademola (26), George Thomas (24), Kim Aruna (23), Martins Sunday (26), Mubarak Alade (21) and Thomas Williams (21), were on Friday arraigned before an Iyaganku Magistrates’ Court.

Prosecutors told the court the suspects allegedly posed as white women living in the United States on platforms including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok in a bid to defraud unsuspecting victims.

According to the prosecution, the group allegedly used foreign phone numbers to make their identities appear genuine.

The incident reportedly occurred on March 5 around 10 a.m. in the Alakia Airport area of Ibadan.

All seven defendants pleaded not guilty to the impersonation charge.

Magistrate Gladys Olanrewaju granted them ₦1 million bail each, with two reliable sureties required in the same amount.
