Frustration is growing in Katsina as residents accuse the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) of failing to provide stable electricity during the holy month of Ramadan.
Despite KEDCO’s earlier announcement of a N500 million investment to boost power supply in the city, many residents say the situation has actually worsened, with frequent outages disrupting daily life and business activities.
Several households say the erratic electricity supply has made it difficult to prepare meals during Suhur and Iftar, two critical periods during Ramadan. Business owners are also feeling the heat, as many now rely heavily on generators amid rising fuel costs.
A frozen food seller in Kofar Kaura said prolonged outages have forced her to throw away cartons of fish and chicken, while operators of cold rooms, welding shops, barber salons and phone charging centres say their incomes have dropped sharply.
Many residents are also questioning how the N500 million reportedly invested to improve power supply has not translated into visible improvements. They are urging KEDCO to be transparent about the project and prioritise reliable electricity during Ramadan.
Community members warn that continued power challenges could cripple economic activities across the state if urgent action is not taken.
