Families of 16 police officers who died in active service in Benue State have received N22.3 million in financial support from the Nigeria Police as part of efforts to support the loved ones they left behind.
The cheques were presented in Makurdi by the Benue State Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, who urged the beneficiaries to use the funds wisely.
Represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Mohammed Yakubu, the CP explained that the money came from the police welfare scheme under the Group Life Assurance and Group Accident policy.
He said although money cannot replace the lives lost, the payment is meant to help families cope during the first year after the death of their loved ones.
Emenari also encouraged the families to invest the funds in businesses that could help them become self-reliant while waiting for other benefits from the force.
He paid tribute to the officers, describing them as brave personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Happiness Sale expressed appreciation to the police for continuing to support families of personnel even after their death.
