Intelligence-led raid uncovers massive codeine stash as anti-drug war intensifies in Kano.
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has arrested a 45-year-old man, Ashiru Bala, for allegedly possessing 1,499 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup.
According to the agency’s spokesperson, Sadiq Muhammad-Maigatari, the suspect was picked up at his residence in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area, on February 25, 2026, following an intelligence-driven operation.
Command Commander, Dahiru Yahaya-Lawal, said Bala had transported the consignment from Abuja and was set to deliver it to a local dealer in Kano for illicit distribution.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted to moving illegal substances for about two years and receiving substantial payments per delivery — fully aware the trade was unlawful.
The arrest, officials say, is part of the ongoing “Operation Ramadan Mubarak”, aligned with the anti-drug campaign spearheaded by NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba-Marwa.
The agency insists it will sustain pressure on drug networks, especially during high-demand periods, to protect communities from substance abuse.
