Convicts also receive life imprisonment and additional jail terms for related offences.
The Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has sentenced Abubakar Sodiki and Abubakar Mohammed to death by hanging after finding them guilty of criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, kidnapping, and illegal possession of firearms.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ahmed Gegele said the prosecution had proven the charges beyond reasonable doubt, linking the men directly to the crimes.
In addition to the death sentence for armed robbery and related offences:
Kidnapping – Life imprisonment
Illegal possession of firearms – 10 years imprisonment
The defendants’ pleas for leniency were noted, but the judge said the law leaves limited discretion where penalties are clearly prescribed.
The case, which began on April 29, 2025, involved the kidnapping of Alhaji Saheed Arowasi from Baruten LGA. He testified that his abductors initially demanded N100 million ransom, later reduced to N10 million before his release.
