The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is urging Nigeria to move beyond promises and take concrete steps to safeguard the rights of women and girls.
In a statement marking *International Women’s Day 2026, Executive Secretary Dr Tony Ojukwu, SAN, stressed that the year’s theme, *“Give to Gain,” is a reminder that gender equality requires real investment in education, resources, and mentorship for women and girls.
Ojukwu highlighted ongoing challenges, including early and forced marriages, low female representation in decision-making, and the disproportionate risks women face during conflict and insecurity. He called for stronger enforcement of laws protecting women, timely access to justice for victims, and sustained advocacy to dismantle barriers limiting women’s opportunities.
The NHRC also reaffirmed its commitment to mediating cases of gender-based violence, discrimination, and other rights violations, ensuring accountability and promoting dignity for women and girls.
“Advancing women’s rights is not just a moral duty—it’s a constitutional imperative and a driver of sustainable development,” Ojukwu said, commending Nigerian women for their resilience and contributions across governance, education, business, agriculture, security, and community development.
