As the world marks *International Women’s Day 2026, the International Press Centre (IPC) is urging governments, political parties, and media institutions to *invest more in women to strengthen democracy, press freedom, and inclusive leadership.
IPC Programme Officer Melody Akinjiyan said empowering women through affirmative action, leadership opportunities, and safer media spaces for female journalists would lead to stronger democratic systems and more inclusive development.
The organisation also called for the *passage of the bill for special seats for women, full adoption of the *35% affirmative action by political parties, and better working conditions for women in the media industry.
According to IPC, giving women the space and support to lead will produce more vibrant media ecosystems and stronger democratic institutions. The group also urged the media to amplify issues affecting women and girls while advancing gender equality in governance.
