FAAN INTRODUCES HYBRID TOLL PAYMENT AFTER AIRPORT TRAFFIC CHAOS

After long traffic queues frustrated travellers at airport toll gates, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has temporarily adopted a hybrid payment system allowing both cash and digital payments.

The decision follows a directive from Bola Tinubu after the full rollout of the cashless toll policy triggered major gridlocks, especially at airport entrances in Lagos.

FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku said the temporary measure would ease congestion while the authority improves the digital system.

According to her, the hybrid approach means travellers can still pay cash at airport toll gates while others continue using digital options like cards and e-tags.

Kuku explained that the original cashless rollout faced challenges because many commuters were not fully prepared for the transition before the March 1 deadline. Despite this, FAAN managed to onboard more than 100,000 users to its digital payment platform within months.

She added that the additional time granted by the Presidency would serve as an extended pilot phase to improve public awareness, onboard more technology partners and strengthen safeguards against revenue leakages.

For now, FAAN says the hybrid system ensures passengers won’t miss flights due to payment delays while the airport authority fine-tunes its digital payment infrastructure.
