EU, GCC CONDEMN IRANIAN ATTACKS ON GULF STATES, CALL FOR RESTRAINT

Tensions in the Middle East continue to rise as the European Union and Gulf states jointly condemn what they describe as Iranian attacks targeting countries in the Gulf.

The European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council issued a strong warning after an emergency virtual meeting of their foreign ministers, urging Iran to immediately halt the attacks.

In a joint statement, both blocs said the strikes threaten regional stability, global security and the safety of civilians. They also reaffirmed solidarity with Gulf countries affected by the attacks and stressed the need to respect international law and the United Nations Charter.

The meeting was led on the EU side by the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, while Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani chaired the GCC delegation.

Both sides also raised concerns about damage to civilian infrastructure, including oil facilities and residential areas, warning that such attacks risk worsening the already volatile situation in the region.

They further called on Iran to curb its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes and avoid activities that could destabilise the Middle East and beyond.

The ministers stressed the importance of protecting major global trade routes, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb, which are critical for global energy supply and maritime trade.

Despite the tensions, both blocs reiterated their commitment to diplomacy and dialogue to prevent further escalation in the region.
