ETHIOPIAN ENVOY HAILS WOMEN’S ROLE IN HUMAN RIGHTS, NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Ethiopian Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Legesse Haile, has praised the historic and ongoing role of women in advancing gender equality, human rights, and national development.

Speaking during the celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa alongside International Women’s Day in Abuja, the envoy highlighted how Ethiopian women played a crucial role in the historic 1896 triumph over Italian forces and continue to shape the country’s progress today.

Haile noted that women are increasingly occupying key leadership positions in Ethiopia, including seats in parliament, cabinet, and regional government offices, reflecting the government’s commitment to gender inclusion.

He urged young people and the Ethiopian diaspora to embrace the spirit of Adwa by supporting national development initiatives—ranging from agricultural modernisation and industrial growth to ambitious economic plans aimed at making Ethiopia one of Africa’s top five economies by 2035.

The ambassador also described the Victory of Adwa as a powerful symbol of Pan-African unity and resistance to colonialism, inspiring generations across the continent to pursue freedom, dignity, and sovereignty.
