As the world marks International Women’s Day 2026, the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) is pushing for stronger support systems and empowerment opportunities for women in the country’s thriving film industry.
AGN National President Abubakar Yakubu said women have played trailblazing roles in Nollywood, contributing immensely as actors, directors, producers, writers, and technical experts. He stressed that empowering women in the industry would not only promote equality but also strengthen Nigeria’s creative economy.
Speaking at the IWD event in Abuja themed “Give To Gain,” Yakubu urged stakeholders, partners, and investors to support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of female actors and creating platforms for their growth.
AGN National Women Leader Oby Okafor noted that despite women’s achievements in Nollywood, many still face limited access to funding, training, leadership roles, and professional opportunities. She called for mentorship programmes, capacity building, gender-inclusive leadership, and stronger collaborations with government and private organisations.
Stakeholders at the event also encouraged greater investment in the creative sector, emphasizing that supporting women filmmakers will drive innovation, expand opportunities for young talents, and strengthen the future of Nollywood.
