Kano’s political scene just heated up as impeachment proceedings begin against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam.
The Kano State House of Assembly has officially served an impeachment notice on Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam, following a petition from the Executive arm of government.
According to Majority Leader Lawan Hussaini (APC–Dala), the move is in line with Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
At the heart of the allegations? Financial misconduct tied to Abdulsalam’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024.
Lawmakers claim he:
- Diverted funds meant for Kano’s 44 local governments
- Allegedly received kickbacks totaling ₦462 million (June 2023 – January 2024)
- Collected ₦726 million from local councils for “special assignments” (Feb – July 2024)
- Facilitated the controversial release of ₦440 million to North Med Pharmaceutical Limited, allegedly breaching procurement and fiscal regulations
The Assembly describes the actions as gross misconduct under constitutional provisions.
Out of 40 lawmakers, 38 signed the impeachment notice — a strong show of backing for the move.
The deputy governor now has two weeks to respond to the allegations.
Kano politics is entering a critical phase. All eyes are on what happens next.
