President Donald Trump says the U.S. is ready to step in militarily to protect global energy supplies as tensions rise around the Strait of Hormuz.
“If necessary, the United States Navy will begin escorting tankers through the Strait of Hormuz,” Trump posted on Truth Social, pledging to guarantee the “FREE FLOW of ENERGY to the WORLD.”
Beyond military escorts, Trump has directed the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) to provide risk insurance and guarantees for maritime trade in the region — a move aimed mainly at stabilising energy shipments but open to all shipping firms.
The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints. Major producers including Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, and Iran rely on it to move crude to global markets.
With threats from Iran and escalating conflict rattling investors, oil and gas prices have already surged, raising fresh concerns about global energy stability.
