POLICE COUNCIL CLEARS DISU AS NEW IGP, TINUBU TO SWEAR HIM IN WEDNESDAY

A new era is set to begin at the Nigeria Police Force as the Police Council has officially endorsed Olatunji Rilwan Disu as Inspector-General of Police. He will be sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

The decision was taken at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a meeting chaired by Tinubu and attended by top government and security officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and several state governors.

Disu’s confirmation follows the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun, marking a leadership transition at the nation’s top policing office.

Governors at the meeting praised Disu’s track record. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted his performance as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) between 2015 and 2021, crediting him with boosting crime control efficiency. Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule described the appointment as merit-based, while FCT Minister Nyesom Wike commended Disu’s professionalism during his service in Rivers and later as FCT Commissioner of Police. Enugu Governor Peter Mbah seconded his endorsement.

Born April 13, 1966, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 and has served in several key operational and investigative roles. Before this appointment, he was Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and Force CID Annex in Lagos.

With his confirmation sealed, expectations are high that he will deepen reforms and strengthen security nationwide.
