NRFF’S ‘RUGBY RISING’ ENGAGES 5,000+ GIRLS NATIONWIDE

Women’s rugby in Nigeria is gaining serious ground! The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) says over 5,000 girls have taken part in its Rugby Rising programme across the country.

According to media coordinator Tolu Oguntimehin, the four-month initiative delivered structured training sessions in schools, community centres and academies — all guided by World Rugby safety standards. The programme was supervised by NRFF board member Hussain Wuraola and implemented by 30 certified coaches nationwide.

Wuraola praised the coaches for reaching underserved communities and helping break cultural barriers that once limited girls’ participation in the sport. She added that standout talents have already been identified for future national team opportunities.

The programme, which ran from November to February, wrapped up with demonstration matches and evaluation sessions. The NRFF says follow-up camps and inter-school competitions are next as it works to strengthen the grassroots pipeline and boost Nigeria’s competitiveness on the regional and global stage.
