NIGERIA LAUNCHES $552M HOPE-EDU PROGRAMME TO TRANSFORM BASIC EDUCATION

The Federal Government has unlocked $552 million for the HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All (HOPE-EDU) programme, aiming to boost foundational learning and expand access to quality education nationwide.

Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa called it a historic moment, saying the fund—released in just 12 months—marks the fastest activation of education financing in Nigeria’s history. “This reflects our commitment to delivering measurable results for Nigerian children,” he said.

The initiative, co-financed by the World Bank and Global Partnership for Education, will strengthen education systems, promote transparency, and expand access across participating states. Federal allocations to education have surged 302% since 2022, reaching ₦3.52 trillion for 2026, the highest ever.

“This funding will directly improve foundational learning, reinforce accountability, and support targeted interventions at the state level,” Alausa added, highlighting the government’s drive for decisive, results-based reform.
