Nigeria is ramping up emergency care nationwide through the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System (NEMSAS), providing free lifesaving care for vulnerable citizens. Dr. Emuren Doubra, NEMSAS Programme Manager, said all 33 states now have EMS structures, with 21 fully operational, though public awareness of the 112 emergency number remains low.
Doubra highlighted successes in pre-hospital care, emergency nursing, and residency training in Emergency Medicine, while calling for better network functionality, a Good Samaritan Law, and stronger collaboration among response agencies. Over 11,000 women and 1,600 newborns have already been assisted under the system.
