NIGER GOV UNVEILS STATE-OF-THE-ART HOSPITAL FACILITIES TO END MEDICAL TOURISM

Gov. Umaru Bago of Niger State has inaugurated modern health facilities at IBB Specialist Hospital, marking a major push to end medical tourism and boost specialised care in the state.

The upgrades include male and female cabin wards, a protacabin wing, a fully equipped Accident & Emergency Unit, a cutting-edge radio diagnostics suite, renal dialysis, ECG, mammogram, X-ray, CT scan, and a modern surgical theatre—described by Bago as among the best in sub-Saharan Africa.

“Complex surgeries like brain and spinal operations, knee replacements, and other major procedures are now conducted here,” Bago said, highlighting partnerships with Egyptian and Russian medical experts and plans to host 20–50 visiting Egyptian doctors monthly.

The governor also announced 250 telemedicine machines for 25 local government areas, a 2MW solar power system to ensure uninterrupted hospital operations, and a new employment portal to expand the medical workforce from 500 to 5,000 staff with attractive incentives.

Since 2024, Niger has upgraded 20 primary healthcare centres and recruited over 2,000 health workers, with plans to revamp 22 general hospitals. The facilities aim to position the state as a hub for advanced medical services in Nigeria and beyond.
