The Nigerian Dental Association (NDA) is urging the public to be cautious about oral health tips on social media, warning that unauthorised claims can be misleading or outright false.
In a statement on Tuesday, NDA President Dr Emedom Elias explained that viral posts about toothpaste “eye marks” and fluoride have sparked confusion. The Association clarified that the coloured marks on toothpaste tubes are purely for manufacturing alignment, not an indicator of ingredients or safety.
The NDA also dismissed claims linking fluoride to cancer, stressing that all toothpaste constituents are strictly regulated and tested for safety before approval.
The Association urged Nigerians to verify oral health information through registered dental professionals and official NDA endorsements, warning that spreading false claims could lead to legal consequences.
“Always seek advice from bona fide NDA members and ignore social media myths,” the statement said, reaffirming the group’s commitment to evidence-based dental communication.
