German Chancellor Friedrich Merz says major questions remain about what happens next in Iran following his talks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
After what he described as a “very open” discussion, Merz admitted he was left wondering about Washington’s long-term plan. “What is the strategy for the day after? Is there a vision for how this country will be governed?” he asked in an interview with German broadcaster ZDF.
Merz noted a “relatively high degree of uncertainty” around the post-conflict roadmap, though he acknowledged that diplomacy with Iran had been attempted for decades. “There has been no lack of diplomacy,” he said, arguing that concerns over Iran’s nuclear development had escalated to a point where leaders felt compelled to act.
The meeting marked Merz’s second bilateral visit with Trump since taking office, underscoring growing transatlantic dialogue amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
