Staff at the Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, have given management 14 days to address poor welfare, salary disparities, and unpaid pensions, warning of a possible strike if their demands aren’t met.
Dr. Nnachi Ama, COEASU Ikwo branch chairman, announced the ultimatum on Monday in Abakaliki, saying the union wants the immediate adoption of the 2024 CONPCASS salary structure and payment of terminal benefits for retired staff. He lamented that the college still runs on 87% of the 2010 salary scale, and staff haven’t yet received the ₦70,000 minimum wage.
The union praised Gov. Francis Nwifuru for improving infrastructure and student enrollment but described staff working conditions as “ugly and pitiable.” They also raised concerns over staff deaths and critical illnesses linked to poor remuneration and inadequate medical care.
Ama warned that without urgent action, a warning strike will disrupt academic activities, though the union affirmed its commitment to industrial harmony.
