China and Nigeria have renewed their commitment to strengthening women’s empowerment and cultural ties, marking the pledge during Lantern Festival celebrations and the China-Nigeria Women’s Carnival in Abuja.
The event, hosted by the Chinese Embassy and China Cultural Center, spotlighted women as drivers of national growth and cultural diplomacy.
Cultural Counsellor Yang Jianxing described women as “the cornerstone of society,” noting China’s progress in advancing women’s rights and expressing readiness to collaborate with Nigeria in education, digital empowerment, and creative industries. With 2026 marking 55 years of diplomatic relations, he said deeper exchanges would unlock fresh opportunities for cooperation.
Nigeria’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Mukhtar Muhammad, echoed the sentiment, calling women essential to innovation, tourism, and economic development. “Empowering our women is not optional; it is essential,” he said, reaffirming plans to expand digital and cultural partnerships with China.
UNESCO’s Jean-Paul Abiaga added that investing in women and girls transforms communities and secures the future.
The celebration featured cultural performances and exhibitions showcasing women’s contributions across arts, technology, and education — reinforcing the message that stronger collaboration can power shared progress.
