Students were introduced to global shipping, sustainability, and career opportunities in Nigeria’s maritime sector during a joint event by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and its Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS) with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
IMO representative Subaskar Sitsabeshan spoke to UNILAG International School students about shipping fundamentals, Nigeria’s strategic role in global trade, and the Green Voyage 2050 sustainability programme, highlighting the need to attract young talent to the maritime industry.
IMS Director Prof. Mary Odukoya said the initiative aims to bridge generational gaps, promote gender diversity, and prepare students for the sector’s evolving workforce. The delegation also met UNILAG Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Foluso Afolabi-Lesi to discuss global partnerships, including collaboration with the World Maritime University.
