An early morning ambush by security forces has stopped a major cattle rustling attempt in Kano State.
The Joint Task Force in Gwarzo intercepted armed bandits who raided Mainika village in Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State, making away with dozens of livestock.
According to Maj. Babatunde Zubairu, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, troops of the Nigerian Army 3 Brigade responded to a distress call around 6:57 a.m. on Sunday and tracked the suspects to Dayi village.
On sighting the troops, the bandits reportedly fled toward Malumfashi LGA of Katsina State, abandoning the stolen animals.
In total, security operatives recovered 135 cows, 119 sheep, one goat and two donkeys — 257 animals altogether — which have since been returned to their rightful owners through local authorities.
The operation involved a coordinated effort between the Army, Police, DSS, NSCDC and local vigilantes. A security source said the bandits suffered heavy casualties during the encounter.
Commander of the 3 Brigade, Brig.-Gen. Ahmad Tukur, praised the troops’ gallantry and reaffirmed the task force’s resolve to tackle cattle rustling and other crimes in the region.
