SENATE: MMIA TERMINAL FIRE PROBE STILL ONGOING

Lawmakers say it’s too early to speculate as investigations continue into the Feb. 23 airport fire.

The Senate Committee on Aviation has dismissed speculation surrounding the fire outbreak at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal One, stressing that investigations are still ongoing.

Committee Chairman, Dr. Buhari Abdulfatai, made the clarification during an inspection of the affected terminal in Lagos, saying it would be premature to suggest sabotage or any specific cause.

“We will allow investigators to complete their work. We cannot issue conclusions while investigations are ongoing,” he said.

Abdulfatai praised the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and its Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, for restoring operations within hours of the incident. He also commended Air Traffic Controllers for swiftly diverting flights and reopening the airspace.

He noted that no lives were lost and reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to prioritising aviation safety.

Similarly, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Abdullahi Garba, applauded FAAN’s response and crisis management.
