Attack follows failed ambush on senior Nigerian Army officer’s convoy.
Suspected Lakurawa terrorists have killed five worshippers and injured three others in a mosque attack in Dadinkowa community, Maiyama Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
According to the Kebbi Police Command spokesperson, SP Bashir Usman, the gunmen stormed the mosque during evening prayers on Wednesday, opening fire on congregants in what authorities described as a reprisal attack.
Police said the violence followed a failed ambush on the convoy of the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Bemgha Koughna, who was en route to visit frontline troops under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The convoy reportedly came under heavy gunfire near Mayama Hill on Feb. 24. Troops responded with superior firepower, neutralising five suspected attackers and foiling the ambush.
Authorities confirmed that five mosque worshippers died from gunshot wounds in the reprisal attack, while three others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby medical facilities.
Security operations in the area are ongoing as residents grapple with renewed fears.
