Security operatives say the ammunition was smuggled from Benin Republic through illegal border routes.
The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two suspected gun runners and recovered 2,625 cartridges allegedly smuggled into Nigeria from the Republic of Benin.
Police spokesman DSP Ayanlade Olayinka said the suspects, aged 35 and 33, were apprehended by operatives of the Monitoring Unit, Saki Operation Base, at Budo Mosalasi in Saki area of the state following credible intelligence.
According to police findings, the suspects allegedly operated across international borders, importing and distributing prohibited ammunition to unauthorised individuals. Authorities warned the weapons could have been used for armed robbery, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes.
Recovered items include 105 packets of pump-action cartridges — each containing 25 rounds — concealed inside four jerry cans, along with two unregistered motorcycles allegedly used for transportation.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Femi Haruna, commended the operation, stressing that proactive policing and intelligence gathering remain key to dismantling criminal networks.
The suspects are assisting investigators and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
