High Court twists the plot in Abuja as legal heavyweights walk out on bail.
An Abuja High Court on Friday admitted Mike Ozekhome, SAN, and Ponfa Useni to bail of N10 million each over allegations of forging documents to claim a London property. The case, filed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, originally included 12 counts, some linked to forging passports and an irrevocable power of attorney tied to the late General Jeremiah Useni.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty. Their lawyers applied for bail, which the prosecution did not oppose. Justice Chizoba Oji granted bail with a surety of equal value and ordered the deposit of their international passports. She allowed the defendants to return home over the weekend, with the condition to perfect their bail by Monday, failing which they risk remand. Trial was adjourned to March 13.
The alleged fraud involved creating a fake Nigerian international passport under the name Tali Shani to support claims on a London property at 79 Randall Avenue, London NW2 — a violation of Sections 363 and 364 of the Penal Code Act, FCT 2006.
