Tensions in the Middle East spiked sharply Saturday night after Israel announced it had carried out a preemptive strike against Iran.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the operation targeted Iran, as explosions were reported in Tehran, with thick smoke seen rising over parts of the capital.
Sirens wailed across Israel shortly after, and authorities declared a “special and immediate” state of emergency nationwide — suspending schools, public gatherings and most workplace activities except essential services.
According to Channel 12, the strike was carried out jointly by the U.S. and Israel, though official confirmation from Washington was not immediately available.
The escalation comes even as diplomatic efforts were ongoing over Iran’s nuclear programme. Badr Albusaidi, Oman’s foreign minister who has been mediating talks, met U.S. Vice President JD Vance just a day earlier.
After the meeting, Albusaidi expressed optimism on X, saying peace was within reach and he looked forward to decisive progress.
With diplomacy and military action now colliding, the region braces for what comes next.
