KANO GOVT DENIES AMNESTY CLAIMS, VOWS PROTECTION OF RIGHTS

State rejects allegations of harassment, insists actions target cybercrime, not critics.

The Kano State Government on Thursday dismissed Amnesty International’s claims of harassment and intimidation as “misleading and unfounded,” stressing its commitment to human rights and freedom of expression.

Commissioner Ibrahim Waiya said security agencies act only on credible allegations of cyberbullying, defamation, or incitement, and that opposition members have historically benefited from government payments under Gov. Yusuf’s administration. He urged organizations to verify facts before making claims, emphasizing that law enforcement follows existing laws on cybercrime, public order, and individual rights.

Waiya affirmed that citizens can express opinions freely, and the government distinguishes between constructive criticism and illegal acts, reiterating its commitment to democracy, justice, and peaceful coexistence.
