CBCN URGES GOVT: USE AI, DRONES TO FIGHT TERROR, END DELAYS IN PROSECUTION

Catholic bishops warn rising insecurity threatens lives and democracy.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to adopt modern surveillance technology, including drones and AI, and speed up the prosecution of terrorists. The appeal came during the closing mass of their First Plenary Meeting for 2026 in Abuja.

Bishops cited the recent massacre in Woro and Nuku, Kwara, where over 200 people were killed, and noted that brazen attacks across northern and middle-belt regions leave farmers stranded and thousands displaced. They criticized delays in prosecuting terrorists and reintegrating insurgents into security forces as undermining public trust.

The CBCN also urged urgent electoral reforms, real-time transmission of BVAS election results, and prioritizing the “Common Good” to restore trust in governance. They welcomed efforts to seek external assistance but stressed that Nigeria’s security and destiny remain in local hands.

The plenary also announced leadership changes: Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso becomes CBCN President, with Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins as Vice President.

Bishops called for interfaith harmony during the overlapping 2026 Lenten season and Ramadan, emphasizing that “a better Nigeria is possible” if leaders prioritize service over sectional interests.
