NSCDC TO CONTRACTORS: STOP DAMAGING FIBRE CABLES OR FACE ARREST

Authorities raise alarm as careless excavation by construction firms threatens telecom services, banking operations, and national security in Kwara.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, has issued a stern warning to road construction companies, contractors, and developers to stop damaging fibre-optic cables and other critical national infrastructure.

State Commandant Bala Bawa Bodinga said the increasing destruction of underground telecom installations—often caused by negligence and failure to verify utility lines before digging—is disrupting communication networks, banking systems, and emergency response services.

He directed all contractors to obtain proper clearance and verify underground utilities with service providers and the NSCDC before starting excavation. He stressed that ignorance of fibre-optic cable locations will not be accepted as an excuse.

The Command warned that anyone found responsible for damaging critical infrastructure will face arrest, investigation, and prosecution under the law.

NSCDC reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on vandalism and urged residents to report suspicious activities, stressing that protecting national assets is vital for public safety and economic stability.
