NBTE UNVEILS NEW HND CURRICULUM TO BOOST NIGERIA’S HEALTH WORKFORCE

In a move to future-proof Nigeria’s healthcare system, the NBTE is rolling out a new HND curriculum designed to produce highly skilled and globally competitive health education professionals.

The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has stepped up efforts to strengthen health education with the development of a new Higher National Diploma (HND) curriculum in Health Education and Promotion.

Speaking at a curriculum workshop in Kaduna, NBTE’s Director of Curriculum Development, Dr O.O. Bello, said the initiative is key to improving technical training and preparing health professionals to tackle emerging diseases, non-communicable conditions, and evolving healthcare challenges.

He noted that the board is already working on its tenth curriculum this year, reflecting its commitment to aligning Nigeria’s technical education with global standards and ensuring graduates are job-ready.

According to him, the new curriculum will harmonise ND and HND programmes, incorporate digital health technologies, and introduce simulation-based learning to strengthen practical skills and service delivery across healthcare systems.

NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Bugaje, emphasised the importance of continuous curriculum updates, noting that skills and healthcare demands are constantly evolving despite funding challenges.

Health education experts also welcomed the move, describing it as critical to improving career pathways, strengthening healthcare delivery, and ensuring Nigeria produces competent professionals for the future.
