After a deadly bandit attack that left dozens dead and communities shattered, the Kebbi Development Forum is calling for urgent, community-driven security reforms to stop the growing violence.
The Kebbi Development Forum (KDF) has expressed deep sympathy for victims of the recent Lakurawa bandit attack on eight communities in Arewa Local Government Area, where about 35 people were reportedly killed and cattle rustled.
The forum described the assault as barbaric and cowardly, extending condolences to the Kebbi State Government, the Argungu Emirate Council, and families who lost loved ones. It also sympathised with residents affected by similar attacks in Shanga, Ngaski, and Yauri LGAs.
KDF raised alarm over reports that bandits were openly moving through communities like Besse, Zaria Kala-Kala, and Utono—threatening residents and attempting to force them into submission. It warned that failure to act swiftly could worsen tensions and deepen insecurity across the state.
While acknowledging efforts by the state government and security agencies to restore order, the forum stressed that centralised security responses alone are no longer enough. It called for a decentralised approach that empowers local governments, traditional rulers, and community leaders to actively coordinate and respond to threats.
According to the forum, strengthening grassroots institutions will ensure faster response, better intelligence gathering, and improved protection for vulnerable communities.
KDF also urged the Federal Government and neighbouring countries to collaborate more closely to flush out criminal elements operating across borders. It reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at tackling insecurity and restoring peace in Kebbi and across Nigeria.
